Stepping In... the first class
Welcome to Nia, welcome to your journey of movement based upon pleasure and using movement to self-heal. Thank you for your courage to 'step in' to class, in to an experience that we will do our best to ensure will be full of learning, opportunity and most importantly; Joy.
Yes, the Nia workout is a one hour movement class choreographed to fabulous music. However, it is not about the perfection of a step or a sequence, it's about the experience you have in your body. We embrace "mis-takes" (you just mis-took it, that's all), in fact, when the brain becomes confused, growth happens, allowing the body to learn something new. So let's invite a little confusion, invite the mis-takes, allow laughter to erupt and challenge our habitual ways of moving. This is fun. Treat this first class as an opportunity to be fully in beginners mind, let go of assumptions and bring awareness into your body. If you find yourself in your mind (thinking), return to sensation, return to the body. For example, pick a body part eg. your feet. Bring awareness to your feet, sense them... sense the floor, sense the shifting of weight, sense whatever is there. As we learn to listen to sensation, we gain body literacy and we improve our ability to make somatic choices that better serve our body and life. |
Here are 13 steps for getting the most out of your Nia classes.
We also suggest that new students read our Health and Safety page to get some ideas to support healthy and safe movement choices as you learn Nia. |
