Shout Outs - what others say...

"Nia is fantastic. I had no idea what to expect but the music is incredible, the movements are inspiring, and I get to feel energised during the class and for a long time afterward."       ~ Susan Brady

"Great fun, great vibe and a great workout! After years of trying different practises, with Nia I feel that I have finally found the perfect physical activity that includes my interest in mindfulness. Nia has also been very helpful for me in managing a chronic pain condition and promoted better, balanced moods and a general overall sense of wellbeing.                               ~ Stella Curruthers

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is nia for?
In a nutshell... almost everyBODY.

However, we acknowledge that some people suffer from health issues that may introduce challenges to gaining the most from a Nia class experience. If you have an illness or disability that may be an impediment to accessing or enjoying a Nia class, please let Alison know in advance.

One requirement for Sunday Nia at The Studio is the ability to walk un-aided up a flight of stairs, as the studio is on the first floor and no lift is available.
what if i can't attend all 5 classes, will i miss out?
No, you won't miss out.

You are welcome to make up your missed classes by attending a later Sunday class in term, or by coming to a Thursday evening class instead.
i am (...unfit, uncoordinated, overweight... fill the gap).  can i still do nia?
Yes, you can.

Nia is an adaptable movement practise. Alison teaches in a beginner-friendly way by scaffolding movement. This means we always begin with the base; with the Nia steps and stances. As a sequence repeats you'll have the option to layer in the core and the upper extremities, if you choose to. We also always begin a movement sequence slowly. Some may increase the tempo, others will choose to move at a slower speed. You do you.

Nia can also be done from a chair. Chairs are available and you are welcome to participate in class from the comfort and stability of a chair. There is also a wall with a bar, which can be handy to use for support if required.
what do i wear and bring to class?
Where clothes you feel comfortable to move in. Clothes that allow for a range of motion and expression is a good thing.

Also, Nia is a barefoot movement practise. However, some students do wear soft soled shoes for comfort or to support a foot health condition. Moving barefoot is encouraged to build up strength, stability and mobility in the muscles, bones and joints of the feet. Nia is a low impact practise so moving barefeet in a grounded safe way has numerous health benefits for your base.
will there be other beginners?
Most likely, given this offer is for Nia newbies!  And if there are no absolute Nia virgins, there will be movers in class who are new-to-Nia within the past two months.
are there mirrors in the studio?
Yes BUT... we draw the curtain across a third to half the studio so that there's an option for everybody. We have groovers who LOVE to dance with their reflection, and others who loath it! The mirror can be a wonderful teaching tool, enabling the teacher to dance "with" the group instead of "at" the group. Also, it enables students to not have to reverse or mirror the moves, which can cause confusion. AND the presence of our own reflection can still be an impediment to accessing the Joy of Movement, to releasing into the present moment, and to embodied relaxation... hence the curtains!
Do i need to book into class?
Not for Sunday Nia classes. You will be auto-booked into all 5 Sunday classes listed above when you purchase the 'Sacred Sunday' Term offer.

BUT, if you cannot make a Sunday class and you wish to attend a Thursday evening or a Sunday class later in term in lieu of, booking is encouraged. If you book and class is cancelled for whatever reason (eg. teacher illness or low class bookings), you will be notified by email. If you don't book you run the risk of turning up to an empty venue.

You can read the specific Booking FAQ's here.
got a question we haven't answered?
You can email Alison at any time at [email protected] with any questions you may have and we'll get back to you ASAP.
