"Dance fitness classes with Alison are fantastic. I had no idea what to expect but the music is incredible, the movements are inspiring, and I get to feel energised during the class and for a long time afterward."       ~ Susan Brady

"Great fun, great vibe and a great workout! After years of trying different practises, with Alison's classes I feel that I have finally found the perfect physical activity that includes my interest in mindfulness. Classes have also been very helpful for me in managing a chronic pain condition and promoted better, balanced moods and a general overall sense of wellbeing.                                           ~ Stella Curruthers

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are holistic dance fitness classes for?
In a nutshell... almost everyBODY.

However, we acknowledge that some people suffer from health issues that may introduce challenges to gaining the most from a holistic dance fitness class experience. If you have an illness or disability that may be an impediment to accessing or enjoying class, please let Alison know in advance. Chairs are available for use in both venues, should moving from a chair create more ease for you.

One requirement for Sunday classes at The Studio is the ability to walk un-aided up a flight of stairs, as the studio is on the first floor and no lift is available. Access is easy for Thursday classes at Moera Hall as there are only three steps and a ramp is also available.
is there a use-by date for the 3 class special?
Yes. The voucher activates upon first use and the remaining two classes must be used within 3 months of the first.
i am (...unfit, uncoordinated, overweight... fill the gap).  can i still do holistic dance fitness?
Yes, you can.

This is an adaptable movement practise. Alison teaches in a beginner-friendly way by scaffolding movement. This means we always begin with the base; with the steps and stances. As a sequence repeats you'll have the option to layer in the core and the upper extremities, if you choose to. We also always begin a movement sequence slowly. Some may increase the tempo, others will choose to move at a slower speed. You do you.

Holistic dance fitness can also be done from a chair. Chairs are available and you are welcome to participate in class from the comfort and stability of a chair. There is also a wall with a bar, which can be handy to use for support if required.
what do i wear and bring to class?
Where clothes you feel comfortable to move in. Clothes that allow for a range of motion and expression is a good thing.

Also, this is a barefoot movement practise. However, some students do wear soft soled shoes for comfort or to support a foot health condition. Moving barefoot is encouraged to build up strength, stability and mobility in the muscles, bones and joints of the feet. Movement is generally low impact, so moving barefeet in a grounded safe way has numerous health benefits for your base. Some people will introduce a more athletic quality by leaping or jumping, but that is entirely individual choice based upon ability and preference.
will there be other beginners?
Most likely!  And if there are no absolute holistic dance fitness virgins, there will be movers in class who are new within the past two months.
are there mirrors in the studio?
Yes, at The Studio. No, at Moera Hall. On Sundays at The Studio we draw one curtain across a third of the studio so that there's an option for those who prefer not to see themselves in a mirror. We have groovers who LOVE to dance with their reflection, and others who loath it! The mirror can be a wonderful teaching tool, enabling the teacher to dance "with" the group instead of "at" the group by facing the same way. Also, it enables students to not have to reverse or mirror the moves, which can cause confusion. AND the presence of our own reflection can still be an impediment to accessing the Joy of Movement, to releasing into the present moment, and to embodied relaxation... hence the curtain option!
Do i need to book into class?
Bookings are not mandatory, but they are encouraged. There are advantages to booking... If you book and class is cancelled for whatever reason (eg. teacher illness or low class bookings), you will be notified by email. If you don't book you run the risk of turning up to an empty venue.

You can read the specific Booking FAQ's here.
got a question we haven't answered?
You can email Alison at any time at [email protected] with any questions you may have and we'll get back to you ASAP.
