Nia classes are danced barefoot to soul-stirring and inspiring music that blends the best of East and West. Intricately crafted, a one-hour Nia class is a journey of music and movement, artfully moving through 7 cycles that allows for focus setting, warming up, higher intensity combined with lower intensity, cooling down, moving up and down from the floor and stillness. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with areas of the body; the base, the core and the upper extremities.
The original "fusion fitness workout" created 38 years ago, Nia is inspired by nine different movement forms; three dance arts (Jazz, Modern and Duncan Dance), three martial arts (Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do and Aikido) and three healing arts (the work of Moshe Feldenkrais, the Alexander Technique and Yoga) which work together to provide a somatic, whole body workout that is balanced, functional and fun!
The cool thing is Nia can be adapted for every body. Options to move at varying levels of intensity using a greater or lesser range of motion and at varying speeds is demonstrated. As a Nia student you are encouraged and empowered to move in Your Body's Way, what a relief!
